Seas in the Book of Mormon

Book of Mormon lands were considered to be an "island" nearly surrounded by water (Alma 22:32), so it is natural to assume that there would be references to different bodies of water surrounding the Nephite homeland. There are indeed many references to the east and west seas, particularly in reference to the narrow neck of land separating the land southward from the land northward. In Helaman 3:8 we read that the Nephites "did multiply and spread, and did go forth from the land southward to the land northward, and did spread insomuch that they began to cover the face of the whole earth, from the sea south to the sea north, from the sea west to the sea east." Thus the Nephites specified that there were seas in all directions surrounding their lands of inheritance.
